Tela’s corals are creating a sizzle! And not just the kind that you hear from the thousands of popping shrimp when you listen to the sounds of healthy reef. We’re thrilled that the media has picked up on our story and the people who are helping us. Here’s a media roundup!
Before our Music for the Ocean tour in Utah, the Deseret News, Utah’s biggest daily, profiled our partner Chad Cannon in a story titled, “He’s standing up for the coral reefs … with his violin.” It describes Chad’s start playing violin at age 4 and his journey through Harvard and Juilliard. It follows him as he built a career composing for film and video games, and ultimately joined us in Tela, where he became entranced by its corals. Chad also had the opportunity to write the score for a piece in The Economist inspired by the powerful currents surrounding Japan.
Oceanus magazine profiled me in a piece titled, As the ocean warms, a science writer looks for coral solutions, This story followed my visit to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution last summer. It describes how my career started in science but shifted to science writer and author. I, of course, eventually found the mystery of Tela’s reefs impossible to ignore. Originally planned as a book talk, Chad joined me for the event, turning the evening into an incredible, memorable evening for all of us. (Thanks again WHOI!)
In Honduras, the television station SPDH TV made two segments about our partner, Tela Marine. One focused on the marine life and the other on the terrestrial animals on display at the aquarium. Tela Marine is the only free, public aquarium in Honduras, and hosts over 240,000 visitors a year. The aquarium is an incredible opportunity for everyone to marvel at the richness of the local ecosystems, both above and below the waves.
Tela Coral’s mission is to support the science and storytelling around this unusual reef. We’re thrilled that our message is reaching out into the world!
