A brand new coral reef documentary!

We have some exciting news to share! Thanks to support from Hidden Compass’s Pathfinder Prize and Ocean Culture Life, we were able to film a powerful documentary bringing the magic of Honduras’ coral reefs to the entire world.

We assembled an all-star film team made up of talented people from Honduras, all over the U.S., and even Germany.

In May we traveled to Roatán, Utila, and Tela to capture the heart and soul of our reefs…. and the people who love them. The result? Rebel Reef Film—a stunning, emotional and visually breathtaking film that’s about more than just coral. It’s a story of resilience, friendship and the power of hope.

Aquaman of Tela

At the center of the film is Christian, known locally as the “Aquaman of Tela.” After a motorcycle accident left him barely alive, doctors said he would never walk – or dive – again.

But Christian never gave up. With the support of his family and friends and the healing energy of the ocean, he made a full recovery.

Today, he’s diving again and truly inspiring everyone he meets.

As we follow Christian’s journey, Rebel Reef also shows the beauty and strength of Honduras’ reefs—reefs that, like him, are fighting to survive. In a time when the headlines are full of stories about coral mortality and dying reefs, we wanted to show something different: the beauty that remains and the hope we still have.

Making a movie is really different – especially a movie about the natural world.

It’s easy to take for granted the amount of work necessary to capture the beauty of the planet in its best light (literally), but it takes a village to do this.

There are so many little details and tasks that, together, help us create something magical. It’s been fun to learn all of this in the field in such a beautiful place, with really talented people leading the way. “

The footage is absolutely stunning, and the story will move you. We can’t wait to share the full film with you!

Stay tuned for the official screening in December—and who knows, maybe we’ll all be watching it on Netflix soon 😉
