We still don’t know why Tela’s reefs are so healthy — but we’re working fast to find out.
Image

Nestled in the vibrant waters of the Caribbean lies a hidden gem of biodiversity and ecological health — the coral reef of Tela, Honduras.

In an era where the majority of coral reefs are experiencing degradation and decline, Tela’s reefs are a rare example of resilience and hope.

Home to a dozen critically endangered coral species including magnificent elkhorn coral thickets, rich populations of long spined sea urchins, and astonishingly low incidences of disease or bleaching, Tela’s reefs demonstrate nature’s ability to thrive amid challenges.
That’s why we call it the Rebel Reef.

The Tela Premiere of “The Rebel Reef”
October 1, 2026
When we first won the Pathfinder Prize, I never imagined we would make The Rebel Reef: Seeds of Hope. I expected we’d make a short film that was beautiful and meaningful, something we certainly could be proud of and share with the people who had helped us tell the story. Maybe it would find a nice little home online and...

One of the most extraordinary parts of Tela Bay is the massive reef of elkhorn corals (Acropora palmata) on its western flank, a spit of land called Punta Sal. The nearby beach is called Cocolitos and the reef also called by that name. The corals grow in rich thickets here and extend for at least 4 kilometers. This reef near...

Diving Japan’s Seas

When I was first becoming a writer, I lucked into an amazing opportunity to write small articles for National Geographic magazine. Each piece was 150 words long and I learned so much from each of those little bits of writing. About a year in, I was given the chance to write a full page: 500 words! The piece was a...

Chad Cannon opened the Ocean Tales segment of @diving.talks 2026 with a new piece inspired by Portugal’s seas. Inspired by old pianos on Graciosa Island in the Azores, Chad likened their haunting sounds to what shipwrecks might sound like, and composed an ode to a special shipwreck they visited before the talks. The audience gave him a standing ovation and called him back for two encores, including an improvisation.

Enjoy a snippet of his performance in Lisbon.
